Webinar series on measuring gender-based violence in Latin America and the Caribbean

An activity of the Development Account Project on Resilient and Agile National Statistical Systems to meet post-COVID-19 needs to recover better

Date and time

13-15 June 2023

9:00 - 10:30 (UTC-6)

Context

Gender-based violence against women continues to be a significant public health concern and a human rights violation. In a relatively short period, the COVID-19 pandemic has already had a tremendous impact on societies and economies worldwide, affecting almost every aspect of daily life, and gender based and domestic violence against women and girls has become a common concern. Nonetheless, statistical data remains insufficient to monitor this phenomenon.

Against this backdrop, different initiatives at the international and regional levels have been put in place to monitor violence against women, including femicides. For example, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Women recently released a statistical framework for measuring the gender-related killings of women and girls. Most United Nations Regional Commissions maintain various datasets or portals on gender discrimination and violence, and provide jointly with UNODC, technical assistance to enhance their capacity to collect and process data and eventually analyse and disseminate gender statistics.

Objectives

The webinar series enhanced the knowledge and capacity of participants to optimize the use of survey and administrative data for monitoring of gender-based violence. More specifically, the webinars:

  • Provided participants with an understanding of data needed to monitor gender-based violence.
  • Explained the methodologies and tools used to harness survey and administrative data for the monitoring of gender-based violence.
  • Discussed the implementation of the statistical framework for measuring the gender-related killings of women and girls.
  • Explored the use of new data sources to measure gender-related violence, such as the use of emergency numbers and hotlines data.

Participants

Staff of agencies of the National Statistical System responsible for the production of data related to gender-based violence and the users of these data, including participants from the National Statistical Office, Ministry of Women and Family Affairs, Ministry of Justice and any other national entities involved in the topic.
