The Online course to mainstream gender in crime & criminal justice statistics kicked off with almost 700 participants

Over the next 5 weeks, 687 participants will be able to learn about how to mainstream gender perspective into crime & criminal justice statistics, thanks to the online course that INEGI and UNODC, through their UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence, have made available from February 21 to March 25, 2022.

This course provides participants with the opportunity to learn gender concepts and frameworks on statistics and indicators related to crime and criminal justice, which encompass several SDG targets from a gender perspective. This, with the general purpose of strengthening the capacity to produce high-quality statistics, including indicators, to inform political decisions at the national and international levels.

The course is aimed at personnel working in the field of crime statistics and criminal justice, whose main responsibilities include the collection, production, analysis and/or dissemination of statistics and indicators related to crime and justice. The course is also open to policy and decision makers who wish to understand the concepts and methodological details behind the SDG indicators related to crime and gender, to interpret them accurately to use the data for evidence-based decision making. Civil society staff and students who wish to deepen their knowledge on crime and gender were also welcome.

Registered participants belong to 18 countries of Latin America and Caribbean: 66% from Mexico, 10% from Guatemala, 4.86% from Ecuador and the rest from Bolivia, El Salvador, Argentina, Colombia and Peru, among others. Spain is also represented among the registered participants. Sixty-eight percent identified as women and 32% as men. This course is the second of its kind in the world (followed by the simile carried out by our sister Center of Excellence UNODC-KOSTAT in Korea), but the first to be carried out in the Latin American and Spanish-speaking Caribbean region. A webinar was held on January 20 to kick off the course, with gender & crime expert international speakers.
