Talking to experts about the gender perspective in crime and criminal justice statistics

On 20th January 2022, the webinar “Talking to experts on gender perspectives in crime and criminal justice statistics” takes place (translated from Spanish). This webinar celebrates the launch of the Online Course: Gender Perspective in Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics (translated from Spanish) organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) through its Centre of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico.

The e-learning course outlines how to integrate a gender perspective into crime and criminal justice statistics in order to produce reliable indicators to monitor the relevant 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also provides participants with the opportunity to learn gender concepts and frameworks on statistics and indicators related to crime and criminal justice, covering several SDG targets with a gender perspective. The aim is to strengthen capacity to produce high quality statistics to inform policy decisions at national and international levels. The course starts on February 21st and will be held only in Spanish. It is necessary to complete the registration form to participate (limited enrollment).

During the launch webinar, the specialists discussed the challenges, advances and contributions of the region to generate more and better data with a gender perspective on crime and criminal justice (check the agenda, available in Spanish). The panellists presented the results of the Global Consultation on the Measurement of Gender-related Killings of Women and Girls (Femicide/Feminicide) promoted by UNODC and UN Women and discussed the Statistical Framework being developed on the subject.

The webinar generated a lot of interest, with registrations from 25 countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. The more than 350 participants focused their comments and questions on access to information, on the variables taken into account for the definition of femicide and on the study of the homicides of people belonging to the LGBTQI+ community. The need to establish national databases to create coordinated information systems on gender-based violence was also discussed.

Due to the great interest shown, the Centre of Excellence will organize another closing webinar on the matter. We will share more information on our networks. Follow us on Twitter: @CdE_UNODC and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CdE.Unodc.Inegi/
