Specialists on the Measurement of Violence against Women join efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean

Within the framework of the “XXIV International Meeting on Gender Statistics”, UN Women, the ECLAC Gender Statistics Division, the National Women’s Institute and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico organized a meeting of specialists in “Measuring gender-based violence against women and girls”.

The meeting brought together a large group of representatives of international organizations, national public officers and civil society representatives from Latin American and Caribbean countries to generate a space for exchange on measurement strategies currently implemented, taking into account the different dimensions and areas in which gender-based violence against women and girls is expressed.

The UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence participated in the meeting to promote the international standards developed by UNODC and to discuss regional progress in the measurement of incidence and the development of registry systems for gender-based violence against women and girls.

During the meeting, several issues were discussed, such as the availability of information on violence against women collected through probabilistic surveys, particularly violence committed by intimate partners and sexual violence committed by non-partners. The use of administrative security and justice registries for monitoring violence against women, the implications of inter-institutional cooperation for the development of interoperable systems, and the sharing of successful cases of the development of unique registry systems were also extensively discussed.

Thanks to the meeting, it was possible to identify initiatives being promoted by the different institutions, which will make it possible to find common spaces for action and synergy, seeking to establish a joint regional road map among the participating organizations. This road map will be defined through the creation of a Regional Community of Practice that will advance the measurement of gender-based violence against women and girls.
