The quality of crime statistics in Mexico

There are several methodologies in the world to assess and improve the quality of data collected and published by different organizations, mainly public organizations. In most of the countries where these methodologies are applied, the institutions in charge of doing so are technical bodies such as the National Statistical Offices, i.e. the counterparts of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, INEGI, or organizations devoted to the quality management of processes and information systems.

Since its creation, the Center of Excellence for Statistical Information on Government, Public Safety, Victimization and Justice has participated in statistical quality assessment processes of victimization surveys, homicide statistics and police statistics in several Latin American countries, in which the different stages to collect, process, validate and disseminate information related to crime incidence are reviewed.

A few months ago, the team of the Center of Excellence for Statistical Information on Government, Public Safety, Victimization and Justice received a request from the National Information Center of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Safety System to participate in the Statistical Review Model (MORE), whose objective was to review inconsistencies in the information collected from the investigation files of the 32 Prosecutor’s Offices and Attorney General’s Offices in the country.

We invite you to consult the document Review to the quality of data from Mexico’s Attorney General’s Offices and Prosecutor General’s Offices (available in Spanish only) in which we describe the participation of the Center of Excellence in the MORE.
