Guatemala presents its first National Crime Victimization Survey, an effort accompanied by the CoE

On May 14, the Center of Excellence for Statistical Information on Crime, Government, Victimization and Justice (CoE), participated in the presentation of the results of the first National Survey of Perception of Public Safety and Victimization (ENPEVI) 2018 of Guatemala.

The presentation was coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior of Guatemala. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) of that country, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) participated through its Infosegura project and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Throughout the event, he highlighted the key contribution of the CoE in the design and implementation of the survey, as it is aligned to the Latin America and the Caribbean crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI) of UNODC, which guarantees quality and regional and international comparability. In addition, having provided end-to-end technical assistance, it allowed the CoE to carry out a complete evaluation of the implementation of the survey, which will serve as a fundamental input for the improvement of the following editions.

The CoE provided technical assistance throughout all the implementation stages from 2014 to 2021, including: the design of key indicators, questionnaire and sample, the development of the interviewers’ manual, training interviewers for the pilot test, launching the pilot test, interviewers training for the national survey, fieldwork support, information analysis, development of materials for dissemination, implementation evaluation and the presentation of results.

The incorporation of Guatemala to the list of countries that have received technical assistance from the CoE on victimization increases, at the regional level, the number of countries with data to monitor the 2030 Agenda, especially for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. With this, the CoE also fulfills its mandate to strengthen statistical, analytical and monitoring capacities in the fields of government, victimization, public security and justice in Latin America and the Caribbean.

ENPEVI is an inter agency cooperation effort bewteen UNODC and UNDP, through the InfoSegura proyect.
