Guatemala prepares to use data from its first Crime Victimization Survey (ENPEVI) to make evidence-based public policy decisions

From October 10 to 12, personnel of the Vice Ministry of Violence and Crime Prevention of the Ministry of the Interior of Guatemala (MinGob) visited the Center of Excellence for Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE) to carry out a workshop on data exploitation of the National Survey on Perception of Public Safety and Victimization (ENPEVI). The objective of this workshop, given by the CoE, was to provide the Government of Guatemala with technical support to generate secondary indicators for the analysis of the data of the ENPEVI, whose results are expected to be published soon.

These activities are framed within the Inter-agency cooperation activities between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), specifically the INFOSEGURA project, which seeks to support the generation of data to feed the design of evidence-based public policies.

ENPEVI adopts the recommendations of the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI), as well as the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS). Its results will allow to report the progress of 4 indicators of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the Goal 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. ENPEVI is the first National Crime Victimization Survey implemented in the country, promoted by the Ministry of the Interior (MINGOB) and the National Institute of Statistics (INE), with the technical assistance of the CdE. Analyzing more deeply the results of a victimization survey, allows to better understand crime and the context of a country, in order to make more effective evidence-based public policy decisions.
