Guatemala works to generate public policies based on evidence: the information for their first National Crime Victimization Survey is being collected

On January 16 and 17, the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE), conducted a field supervision in the framework of Guatemala´s 2018 National Survey on Perception of Public Safety and Victimization (ENPEVI). The objective was to observe the practical application of the questionnaire, how were the interviewers applying the concepts previously learned according to the international standards, as well as to observe the operative aspects which should guarantee the quality of collected data.

ENPEVI is the first National Crime Victim Survey implemented in the country, promoted by the Ministry of Government (MINGOB) and the National Institute of Statistics (INE), with the technical assistance of the CoE, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s InfoSegura project.

Guatemala’s National Crime Victim Survey is based on the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI), an aligned to the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS). ENPEVI will generate information that will allow the monitoring of 4 crime indicators of the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda (SDG). In particular, goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The primary objective of this exercise is to support the generation of data that will serve as a scientific basis for the design of evidence-based public policies.

It is expected that the survey will be completed by the end of February and its results will be published in July of this year.
