The Center of Excellence participates in the First Meeting of the OAS Subsidiary Technical Group on Crime Prevention, Violence and Insecurity

The Center of Excellence participated in the First Meeting of the Subsidiary Technical Group on Prevention of Crime, Violence and Insecurity, which was held on 2-3 October, at the Organization of American States (OAS), in Washington D.C.

This Technical Group was created during the Fifth Meeting of Public Security Ministers of the Americas (MISPA V), which is an initiative of the member states of the OAS and the General Secretariat of the Organization to strengthen dialogue among key actors in public safety in America. The objectives of MISPA are to achieve effective cooperation, to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, to support technical assistance and to exchange promising practices in this area.

This Technical Group was created to share with the countries the need for valid, reliable, timely and comparable statistics and indicators. This is why the CoE presented the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI) as a basic tool to measure crime, as well as the need for an International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS). These methodological instruments were presented to the members of the permanent commissions of the member countries.
