Successful closing webinar of the Online Course “Gender perspective in crime and criminal justice statistics” of INEGI and UNODC-CoE
Mexico City, April 19th – The closing webinar of the Online Course “Gender Perspective in Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics” presented by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and its UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice and held from February 21 to March 25, 2022, took place today.
The objective of the course was to integrate a gender perspective into crime and criminal justice statistics in order to produce reliable indicators to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. The purpose was to strengthen the capacity of participants to produce high quality statistics to inform policy decisions at the national and international level.
In the closing webinar, Ms. Salomé Flores, Coordinator of the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence highlighted the impact of the course:
- 689 students from Latin America and Spain were enrolled: 2% women and 31.8% men. The presence of such a relevant percentage of male participants represents a great advance in the study of this subject;
- The participants were mainly from the Government (59.9%), and from National Statistical Offices (10%), but also from academia and civil society (both around 10%);
- The average score was 90/100 and a knowledge advance of 44% was recorded.
Ms. Flores also summarized the discussion covered in each Module. Among them:
- violence has multiple forms not just the traditional ones;
- the different strategies to improve the collection of information not only from women and girls but also from other vulnerable groups;
- the discovery of sources of information not yet explored to depth;
- knowledge of data management analysis tools.
Ms. Graciela Márquez Colín, President of INEGI stressed the importance of the gender perspective in the production and dissemination of statistics on government, crime and justice, reaffirming the commitment to continue working with the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence in this area. In the third segment, course participants from different sectors shared their views on the gender perspective in crime and criminal justice statistics. In the final words of the webinar, Mr. Adrián Franco Barrios, Vice President of INEGI’s Governing Board, emphasized the impact of justice and security statistics with a gender perspective in public policies.
