INEGI expands its capacities for measuring Illicit Financial Flows
From April 4 to 5, staff from the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) participated in a workshop for the exchange of experiences and methodology on the measurement of illicit financial flows associated with criminal activities. This workshop will allow INEGI to develop statistical projects that capture the complexity of these financial exchanges.
The workshop was given by staff from the research and trend analysis branch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and was attended by staff from INEGI’s General Directorate of Government, Public Security and Justice Statistics. Participants learned about the general guidelines for measuring illicit financial flows derived from drug trafficking and human trafficking, as well as the methodology used to measure them in Mexico. In addition, they were able to learn about the results of the pilot application of this methodology, developed in 2021 by the Center of Excellence.
At the end of the workshop, INEGI undertook the commitment to analyze the results of the pilot test in depth, assessing the relevance of further refining it for possible subsequent applications. The Center of Excellence will continue to support Mexico and countries in the region in the implementation of this methodology, which can be used to report progress on SDG 16 and specifically on indicator 16.4.1 “Total value of incoming and outgoing illicit financial flows”.
