Trinidad and Tobago prepares to collect firearms data with UNODC technical assistance

Port of Spain, 8 April – UNODC’s Firearms Trafficking Section organized a workshop to strengthen the capacities of Trinidad and Tobago authorities to collect and analysis firearms-related data for the purposes of monitoring illicit arm flows and contribute to both measuring the achievement of Target 16.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and promoting an evidence-based action against firearms trafficking.

With the aim of fostering inter-agency cooperation and information exchange in the fight against illicit firearms trafficking, this workshop brought together experts from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Ministry of Defence, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Attorney General’s Office and the Strategic Services Agency. The workshop focused on the Illicit Arms Flows Questionnaire (IAFQ), UNODC’s tool for collecting and analysing firearms-related data, which is distributed to all Member States annually. The IAFQ promotes standardization of data collection efforts globally, and also facilitates the identification of trafficking routes, trends and links to other crimes, ultimately contributing to an evidence base that helps design more effective policy and operational responses at the local, national and international levels.

Giada Greco, from the UNODC-INEGI Centre of Excellence, presented in the session dedicated to monitoring the illicit flow of firearms, talking about target 16.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals and the information available in Trinidad and Tobago.
