More and better data to prevent sexual violence against children

On Thursday, March 24, the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE) in collaboration with the Early Institute presented the report “Sexual violence against children in Mexico: Challenges and Opportunities in the Main Sources of Statistical Information“, which they jointly elaborated. The purpose of this document is to bring to light: the need for more and better data on sexual violence against children and adolescents; and the contributions made by different sources of statistical information to measure this problem in Mexico.

Salomé Flores Sierra from the CoE, Annayancy Varas from the Early Institute, Keila Morales from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Eloina Meneses from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), Eva Prado from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), participated with this objective and with the aim of articulating efforts to generate quality statistics on this matter.

Salomé Flores Sierra pointed out that, although having quality statistical information allows us to measure this phenomenon, without it, it is not possible to make decisions, nor is it possible to be accountable. Also, Annayancy Varas emphasized that an important part of the strategy to prevent sexual violence against children is undoubtedly the generation of knowledge, which requires joint actions with the information sources.

Finally, they agreed that this document is presented as a first step towards the integration of a national statistical information system and the establishment of a work agenda between the different institutions and organizations to improve the measurement of sexual violence against children in Mexico
