International Classification Standard for Administrative Data on Trafficking in Persons: A Joint IOM-UNODC Initiative

Recently, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) published the first global technical guide for collecting administrative data on trafficking in persons. This initiative seeks to address the quality evidence gap that hinders the development of policies and programs to combat human trafficking. The agencies realized that there is a problem with the paucity of data available on this complex crime, which makes it difficult to detect and analyze. IOM and UNODC are proposing the International Classification Standard for Administrative Data on Trafficking in Persons (ICS-TIP). This standard promotes a common approach to the collection and analysis of high quality data, which could significantly improve the evidence base for combating this crime. International experts in the field collaborated in the development of this standard. Following the testing and launch phase, IOM and UNODC are seeking approval of the ICS-TIP as part of an international measurement framework for trafficking in persons. The goal is to continue to support Member States and other stakeholders in the production and analysis of quality data on trafficking in persons.
