A conversation on homicides between IBERO’s PSC, INEGI, UNTREF and the CoE

Mexico City, Mexico. January 24, 2024

The Center of Excellence had the opportunity to participate in the broadcast “Cafecito Sereno“, carried out by the Citizen Security Program of the Ibero-American University in Mexico. This emission was dedicated to the Presentation of the Global Study on Homicide 2023, with guests from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico and the Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero (UNTREF) in Argentina. The discussion versed on various data, analyses, trends and reflections regarding homicides in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Adriana Oropeza, Coordinator of the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence, opened the conversation with the most relevant findings from the Americas in the Global Study on Homicide 2023. Dwight Dyer, Director General of Government, Public Security and Justice Statistics, and Mario Santillana, Deputy Director General of National Surveys of Government, Public Security and Justice, of INEGI, presented the instruments available to the institute to capture homicides, especially administrative records and surveys on victimization and public safety. Marcelo Bergman, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies on Insecurity and Violence (CELIV) of the UNTREF, presented an analysis of the current situation in the region regarding homicides, the problems of over-reporting, the lack of definition, as well as a comparison between data from different United Nations agencies.

The “Cafecito Sereno” program was a valuable opportunity to learn more about homicides in Latin America and the Caribbean. The data and analysis presented by the guests showed that this is a complex phenomenon that still requires more actions with a comprehensive approach as well as innovative techniques and methodologies that allow its prevention.
