Towards the strengthening of the Dominican Republic’s National Statistical System

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. December 7, 2023.

The National Statistics Office (ONE) of the Dominican Republic organized the workshop “Dialogues for the strengthening of the National Statistical System: From statistical planning and the implementation of good practices, with a gender perspective”. This space for dialogue and exchange sought to share the experiences of institutions producing official statistics, as well as those of national users and international guests. The workshop addressed issues related to planning, quality and statistical standards for the benefit and strengthening of the country’s national statistical production.

Within the framework of this workshop, a discussion was held on the implementation of good statistical practices on citizen security promoted by both the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence and the Center for Analysis of Citizen Security Data of the Dominican Republic. This discussion focused mainly on the technical support provided by the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence and the statistical standards developed by UNODC.

Specifically, the Center of Excellence spoke about the main good statistical practices on citizen security carried out in the region, as well as their opportunities for improvement. It also discussed the type of assistance provided to security and justice institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, it was explained how the NSO has been advised on the adoption of the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes and the statistical framework for the measurement of the gender-related killings of women and girls.

The reflections reached during the workshop opened the door for closer collaborations between the NSO, the Center for Analysis of Citizen Security Data and the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence for the analysis of national criminal information and the strengthening of the information used for decision making and crime prevention.
