Brazil begins the process of adopting the ICCS in the Judiciary

The National Council of Justice (CNJ) of Brazil, responsible for developing judicial policies that promote the effectiveness and unity of the Judiciary, initiated an ambitious partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime through its Liaison and Partnership Office in Brazil and the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice UNODC-INEGI.

This partnership will trigger actions aimed at the correct adoption and implementation of the International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) in the official statistics of the Brazilian Judiciary and Public Ministry. The intention will be to use the ICCS as a standard for the classification of criminal information of all cases that are received, processed and judged in the country. In addition, the use of the ICCS will make the information comparable and interoperable with other instances of the criminal justice system.

The work for the adoption of the ICCS, will be led by the CNJ and will be supported by various institutions such as the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the National Council of the Public Ministry and the Institute of Applied Economic Research through the Interagency Committee of the 2030 Agenda in the Judiciary.
