The collaboration between UNODC and INEGI continues

Last October 9, Mr. Antonino De Leo, Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mexico, Ms. Angela Me, Chief of the Research and Trend Analysis Branch at UNODC Headquarters Office, Salomé Flores, Coordinator of the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice, met with Mr. Julio Santaella, President of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico. In this meeting, Mr. Mario Palma, Vice-president of the Board of Governors and responsible of the Subsystem of Information on Government, Public Security and Justice, Mr. Adrián Franco, General Director of Government, Security and Justice Statistics and Mr. Eduardo Gracida, General Director of Liaison and Public Information Service from INEGI participated as well.

During this meeting, the results of the cooperation between UNODC and INEGI through the Center of Excellence from which it has been possible to promote the creation of Statistical Systems on Security and Justice in the Latin America and Caribbean region and the use of tools for the measurement of crime such as Victimization Surveys were acknowledged. In addition, it was achieved the development and approval of the International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission and the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The activities of the Center of Excellence are based on the Roadmap to improve the quality and availability of crime statistics, which proposes a medium and long-term vision for capacity building activities to generate crime statistics in the Latin American and the Caribbean region.
