The Caribbean joins efforts to adopt the ICCS and produce comparable data on crime

From September 11th to 13th, the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice and the Research and Analysis Branch from UNODC gave a regional workshop on the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) to the Caribbean countries of the UNDP CariSECURE project.

Organized by UNDP CariSECURE, the workshop brought together crime data producers and users from police forces, prosecutors, courts and national statistical offices of Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Suriname. During a 3-day course, the participants were introduced and familiarized with the ICCS, its purpose and the advantages of adopting it at the national level, and, moreover, at the regional level.

The national institutions agreed to push forward for a national adoption throughout the National Statistical Systems on Crime and Criminal Justice. In doing so, they outlined an initial roadmap to ensure timely appropriation of this tool. Finally, they committed to produce national data which complies with this international standard and is relevant for reporting both on the SDG Indicators Framework and the United Nations Survey on Crime Trends (UN-CTS).
