The Centre of Excellence bridges ties with Statistics Korea (KOSTAT)

The UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice, along with the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico (INEGI) hosted a technical visit from representatives of Statistics Korea (KOSTAT).

During the visit, the representatives of KOSTAT were able to learn about the functions, capacities and statistical products developed by the INEGI and its importance at a national and regional level. Furthermore, they were informed of the history and the original objectives of collaborating with the UNODC during the formation of the Center of Excellence. They also discussed techniques promoted by UNODC to improve administrative records, as well as household and corporate surveys to measure phenomena such as victimization or corruption, and standardize crime related survey methodology at a national and international level.

The representatives were also able able to get relevant insight about the benefits and challenges generated by the formation of a Center of Excellence. They discussed the ways of adapting such a project to each regions’ reality, allowing all parties to have a greater perspective on the statistic work at an international scale. During the work sessions, each institution was able to exchange knowledge and share successful practices and work recommendations.

Finally, institutions showed interest to work together through joint activities to benefit each region, with the improvement of methodological tools and data collection concerning crime, security and victimization at a global scale.
