Sharing the Latin America and the Caribbean experience in implementing Crime Victimization Surveys with Kenyan authorities using UNODC-LACSI methodology

On 27 March, during the National Data Workshop in implementing Crime Victimization Surveys (26-28 March 2024) in Kenya, the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence shared its experience in providing technical assistance to Latin America & the Caribbean countries in adopting the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI) methodology.

This event was organized by the Kenyan National Crime Research Centre and the REINVENT Kenya project, which brought together national and international experts in crime and justice to discuss the current criminal landscape in Kenya and to share international experiences producing and using crime statistics.

During the intervention, the UNODC Research and Analysis Branch introduced the session with the international landscape of crime and criminal justice statistics, as well as the methodological work of UNODC to promote CVS. Afterwards, the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence shared with participants the United Nations standards available to implement these surveys, such as the Manual on Crime Victimization Surveys, the International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) and some examples of recent implementations in the region by adopting LACSI methodology, such as the ones from Guatemala, Saint Lucia, Perú and Jamaica.

By countries adopting LACSI methodology, not only from LAC region but from around the globe, they can produce relevant and comparable information to measure safety and victimization, and to report the progress of the 2030 Agenda, specifically indicators from Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (indicator 11.7.2) and Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions (indicators 16.1.3, 16.1.4, 16.3.1 and 16.5.1).
