Ecuador presents FemicidiosEC, a tool to visualize data of femicide and violent killings of women data.

On January 24, the Consejo de la Judicatura (CJ) of Ecuador (the Judiciary’s central body) shared with representatives from the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE), of UNODC Ecuador and the Division for Gender Affairs of the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC), their virtual tool FemicidiosEC.

The opening remarks by María del Carmen Maldonado, President of the CJ, highlighted that FemicidiosEC is a dynamic visualization tool on data of femicides and violent killings of women data in Ecuador. This tool has universal access, so it is available for justice operators, specialized researchers, the academia and society at large.

Solanda Goyes, Director for Access to Justice at CJ, made a wide explanation on the methodology and the development of the tool. She highlighted its relevance for policies and measures aimed at preventing problems such as re-victimization in the judicial attention for these crimes. She also remarked the tool’s relevance in improving access to justice, due to the information on the effectiveness and speed of judicial processes.

There was a technical exchange from CoE and CEPAL about the construction of the tool, including questions about data sources, validation of the information, disaggregating of variables, etc. This exchange opens the possibility for a future strengthening of the tool as well as its dissemination as a good regional practice.
