UNODC participation in the First Global Alliance Workshop to report the progress on the promotion of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies

From June 13 to 16 of 2017, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the First Global Alliance Workshop was carried out to report the progress on the promotion of peaceful, just and inclusive societies. The UNODC participated on this event, with presentations from the Tendencies Analysis and Research Unit, and the Centre of Excellence for Crime Statistics on Governance, Victims of Crime, Public Security and Justice. During these areas interventions, the importance of the data and its disaggregation were emphasized in both ways, supporting and promoting the 16 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG16) from the 2030 Agenda, for the design, monitoring and evaluation of the public policies associated with security issues , Justice, combating corruption and organized crime. Also, was presented the data status, based on official statistics, for monitoring the 23 indicators of the SDG16, in each country of the Latin American and Caribbean region.

This workshop was organized by the Global Alliance initiative, to report the progress on the promotion of peaceful, just and inclusive societies with the support of the United Nations Development Program in Argentina, UNODC, UNESCO and Argentina’s Justice and Human Rights Ministry.

For three days,  several governmental organizations and civil society representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, México, Panamá, Perú and Uruguay focused on the challenges of inter-institutional coordination that presents the Sustainable Development Goals and, in particular, the SDG16 implementation.

Other issues related to the 23 global indicators of this goal were discussed too, as the importance of generating additional regional indicators that account shared particular problematic in the countries of the region.

Finally, was referred the possible support that different agencies of the United Nations system can provide to Member States. In the case of UNODC, the technical and methodological assistance was highlighted, in order to generate the necessary data to report the global indicators and support the regional indicators creation.
