The Center of Excellence gives training on Victimization Surveys to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region

From 29 May to 2 June this year, staff of the CoE and UNODC headquarters, provided training on Victimization Surveys in the city of Pattaya, Thailand. This workshop was jointly organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

A total of 45 participants took part in the workshop. They came from 17 countries including:

  • China,
  • India,
  • Indonesia,
  • Kyrgyz Republic,
  • Laos, Malaysia,
  • Mongolia,
  • Pakistan,
  • Philippines,
  • Korea,
  • Thailand,
  • Timor-Leste,
  • Turkey, and
  • Vietnam

In this workshop, participants had the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired along the workshops through simulations and dynamic group activities which covered all stages of the implementation of a Victimization Survey, from design to evaluation.

This training workshop, based on the relevant experience of UNODC and CoE in this area, aimed to raise awareness on the importance of victimization surveys, as well as to provide methodological and operational guidance on the development and implementation of such surveys at national level. This workshop aimed to fill the methodological gap in the generation of high quality and comparable data on indicators on violence, personal security, access to justice and corruption that are included in the statistical framework for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, particularly under Goal 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which seeks to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, facilitate the access of justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
