Panama starts the implementation process of the International Classification of Crime for statistical purposes
On the 19th and 20th of October, staff from the Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Centre of Excellence for Statistical Information on Governance, Public Safety, Victimization and Justice (CoE) delivered a workshop to diverse institutions from the Republic of Panama. This workshop is the first step in adopting the International Classification of Crime for statistical purposes (ICCS).
During the workshop, the participants developed correspondence tables between the ICCS and the Panamanian Penal Code, and the classification used by the Integrated National System of Criminal Statistics (SIEC) and the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) to generate crime statistics. The organization of this activity was supported by SIEC and the UNODC Regional Office in Panama and was attended by officials from the National Police, Judicial Investigation Department, State Border Service, Public Ministry, Judiciary, Ministry of Health, National Migration Service, Social Security, Prison System and the Municipality of Panama.
At the end of the session, a work plan was drafted in order to continue the implementation of the classification, which seeks to improve the quality and comparability of statistical data on crime at national, regional and global levels
