UNODC participates in the inter-agency work for the generation of crime and drug statistics with a gender perspective

The recognition of the importance of gender equality for sustainable development has led to an increase in the demand for data and indicators in the field. That is why the generation of quality information and statistics with a gender perspective is a priority in the 2030 Agenda. To meet this need, the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mexico , through the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence, participated in the 13th Meeting of Inter Agency Group of Experts on Gender Statistics (IAEG-GS), on 7 and November 8 in New York City, United States.

During the Meeting, UNODC shared statistical information and recent publications on drugs and crime with a gender perspective. They highlight the specialized booklet on gender-related killings of women and girls of the Global Study on Homicide 2019, the World Drug Report 2019 and theGlobal Study on Smuggling of Migrants 2018. In this framework, the CdE highlighted that: “The Measuring violence is extremely difficult, therefore it is essential to use harmonized tools to understand the challenges in gender and crime statistics. ”

UNODC will continue to work to contribute to the promotion and generation of statistics with a gender perspective on drugs, crime and justice, and thus support the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions.
