On February 15 and 16, the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE), of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) shared essential information so that the countries that integrate the CariSECURE project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) can continue the process of adopting the International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) in their criminal justice system.

The CoE presented the progress some of the countries have made towards the harmonization of the crimes contained in their criminal codes with the standardized categories proposed in the ICCS. Common practices were highlighted, as well as areas of opportunity. The presentation of these results allowed the UNDP representative, Miguel Trim, as well as the collaborators for the CariSECURE project to express their questions and propose actions to be taken to continue advancing with the adoption of the classification.

Additionally, the CoE provided technical details to ensure that administrative records on crime not only comply with the ICCS framework, but that they can also be relevant for the United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (UN-CTS), an instrument that, together with ICCS, promotes the production of consistent and comparable crime statistics at the international level.

The workshop further served as a platform for the representatives of the CariSECURE countries to discuss relevant aspects of the adoption of ICCS. The CoE team pledged to keep supporting the countries in the next stages of ICCS implementation.

Cocaine Insights was developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It aims to promote evidence-based strategies for the prevention and attention of problems related to cocaine consumption.

For the latter, it is necessary to comprehend its cultivation, production, and trafficking modalities, its evolution, and collaboration dynamics between actors at each stage of its supply chain. In the second edition of this series, Cocaine: a spectrum of products, authors list cocaine consumer products, its added adulterants, and the names by which cocaine products are locally known.

The information provided in the issue contributes to the progress on target 3.5 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and serves as a tool for the evidence-based implementation of UNODC programs.
