Ecuador celebrates World Statistics Day with virtual forum with international guests – UNODC CoE

From October 21 to 25, the third edition of the “Judicial Statistics Week 2024 of the Judiciary Council of Ecuador” was held in the framework of World Statistics Day. This forum aimed to provide a space for dialogue with national and international experts to discuss the analysis of spatial patterns of crime, the use of Big Data, as well as the use of technologies such as Blockchain to improve public administration contracts, among others.

As part of this forum, Adriana Oropeza, Coordinator of the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence (CoE), presented information on the Statistical Framework for the Measurement of Corruption. During her presentation “International Practices to measure, monitor and evaluate levels of corruption and anti-corruption policies”, included the characterization of 19 information systems in Panama, Costa Rica and Peru, which are used by different institutions to strengthen their prevention, detection, investigation and sanction mandates. It also described the typified areas of corruption, a series of preventive measures, as well as the characteristics conducive to denouncing and addressing corruption. Finally, the way in which victimization surveys contribute to the measurement of bribery was presented.

Other institutions that participated in the event included the Attorney General’s Office of Ecuador, the Universidad Jaume I de Castellón of Spain, the Universidad Central de Venezuela, the Foundation for Internet Assistance (FUNDAPI), the Ecuadorian Statistical Society of Ecuador, the Legal Lab Universidad San Francisco de Quito, the National Assembly of Ecuador and the Transparency Unit of the Federal Judiciary Council of the Mexican Judiciary.
