The Center of Excellence supports the 33 countries of the region with UNDOC data collection processes

On May 19th, a briefing about crime and criminal justice data collection in Latin America and the Caribbean was carried out, in the framework of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Data Collection Cycle 2022.

The event was organized by the UNODC Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB) and its Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE) in collaboration with its regional partner, the Organization of American States (OAS).

The objective of this briefing was to raise awareness of regional Focal Points about the importance and usefulness of the UNODC annual data collection and facilitate a greater response by countries. Three questionnaires were presented:

  • United Nations Survey on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (UN-CTS)
  • United Nations Illicit Arms Flows Questionnaire (UN-IAFQ)
  • Questionnaire for the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (GLOTiP)

The Center of Excellence´ team presented the firearm (UN-IAFQ) and trafficking in persons (GLOTiP) questionnaires, since the CoE is currently assisting the 33 Member States of the Latin America and the Caribbean in these data collection processes. The OAS presented the UN-CTS questionnaire, since it has historically supported UNODC in coordinating data collection efforts in the region. In addition, during the event there was a discussion about the regional perspectives on crime and criminal justice statistics, presenting the progress done in the implementation of the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS), the Statistical framework for measuring the gender-related killing of women and girls, the SDG 16 Survey Initiative, and the LACSI Initiative.

The region responded positively to the call with the participation of 70 Focal Points.
