The CoE promotes LACSI in Brazil: National Meeting of Public Security Statistics Managers

On Friday, December 10, the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence virtually participated in the first National Meeting of Public Security Statistics Managers in Brazil, organized by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) in the city of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina. This event is part of the National Day of Public Safety and Social Defense (JONASP).

This first meeting that took place between December 8 and 10, brought together professionals from all over the country to address data management in public security, such as victimization surveys, tools and methodologies focused on statistics and criminal analysis. The JONASP tour includes face-to-face and virtual events in all regions of the country, covering issues of national relevance in the field of public security.

During its intervention, the CoE shared the importance of victimization surveys, the different types of victimization surveys, their use in crime prevention, and their use in public policies. The Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative – LACSI was promoted, which is a UNODC consolidated methodology, which proposes a common methodology aligned to the United Nations international standards, such as the International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes (UNODC; 2015) and the Manual on Victimization Surveys (UNODC, UNECE; 2010). LACSI is led by the Center of Excellence and has a significant level of implementation in the region (13 countries have adopted it by 2021).

LACSI is a tool to generate quality and comparable statistical information to monitor the progress of 5 indicators of the 2030 Agenda (11.7.2, 16.1.3, 16.1.4, 16.3.1, 16.5.1) contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
