We exchanged information on Indicator 16.4.2 to support its measurement in Colombia

On October 6th, the Centre of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE) participated in the Seminar on Data Collection for SDG Indicator 16.4.2, organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) for Colombia.

The country requested to meet with UNODA and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the UN agencies co-custodians of Indicator 16.4.2 “Proportion of seized, found or surrendered arms whose illicit origin or context has been traced or established by a competent authority in line with international instruments” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The objective of the meeting was to exchange information to foster national coordination in reporting on this indicator.

The national actors that participated in the discussions were the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), the Colombian National Police, the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Defence.

The UNODC Global Firearms Programme and Research and Trends Analysis Branch (RAB) and the UN Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) also participated.

Giada Greco from the Centre of Excellence presented the Firearms Possession Module, part of the Latin American and Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI). This module allows countries in the region to collect information on the prevalence of firearms in a territory, the level of acceptance of behaviours related to the use of firearms and the feeling of security, among other indicators from victimization surveys.
