Costa Rica validates its Victimization Module for ENAHO 2022

On April 29th, the Centre of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE) participated in the presentation of the results of the Pilot Test of the proposed Victimization Module of Costa Rica.

The event was organised by the Inter-Institutional Technical Commission on Statistics on Citizen Security and Coexistence (COMESCO) of Costa Rica and included the participation of the Ministry of Justice and Peace, the Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO).

During the event, the results of the pilot test of the Module, which has been developed over the last 12 months by a Working Group formed by COMESCO, were presented. The Centre of Excellence has participated in the discussions by providing technical assistance to Costa Rica through eight virtual missions. The pilot test served to validate the proposed new module for inclusion in the 2022 round of the Costa Rican National Household Survey (ENAHO).

The Costa Rica Victimization Module is based on the methodology of the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI), aligned with the international standards of the United Nations. Costa Rica is the eighth country (after Argentina, El Salvador, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia) to adopt it.

Costa Rica is the first of a number of countries in the region to receive virtual technical assistance from the Centre of Excellence, due to Covid-19 contingency conditions. An example of excellence in the adaptation strategy of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) that has allowed to continue supporting the country in the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda: with the new Module, Costa Rica will be able to generate quality and comparable statistical information to monitor the progress of 5 indicators of the 2030 Agenda (11. 7.2, 16.1.3, 16.1.4, 16.3.1, 16.5.1) contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
