Quality Crime Statistics: Uruguay’s Public Safety Management System

The Public Security Management System (SGSP) of the Ministry of the Interior of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay is the national information management system on criminal information. It registers and manages the process of police reporting and prosecution, generating quality statistical information for decision making in security matters.

The SGSP manages the information of all the events for which police are contacted in the country, with disaggregations on the victim, perpetrator and context of each crime, accident or fact reported. In turn, the system connects with other records of both the justice system and the rest of the public administration. Thus, Uruguay’s 280 police stations and approximately 2,650 public agencies nationwide have access to the system.

Statistical Quality Assessment

In 2019, the UNODC-INEGI Center of Excellence for Statistical Information on Government, Public Security, Victimization and Justice conducted an evaluation of the SGSP. This work represented months of review, interviews and analysis of the production process and all components of the system.

Following the analysis, the Center of Excellence and the Ministry of Interior developed an account of the development, evolution and operation of the SGSP. Click on the image to consult the document.
