Jamaica presents the results of the National Crime Victimization Survey 2019

On March 10, the Ministry of National Security (MNS) and the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) presented the results of the Jamaica National Victimization Survey 2019 (JNCVS). The implementation of the Survey counted with the technical assistance from the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice (CoE).

This statistical project incorporates the methodology of the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI), which means a substantial advance in regional and international comparability and in the quality for the measurement of four indicators (16.1.3, 16.1.4, 16.3.1, 16.5.1) of Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. LACSI follows United Nations international standards such as the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes and the Manual on Victimization Surveys.

During its technical assistance, the CoE collaborated in meetings with relevant stakeholders, in the adaptation of the collection tools, in both virtual and face-to-face training and orientation for field work. With this, the Center of Excellence fulfills its objectives and collaborates with the mandate of UNODC as custodian agency of SDG 16.

This survey measures the perception of safety and condition of victimization of 14 crimes between September 2018 and August 2019. It allows national, rural, and urban coverage, as well as by parish. It offers the details of the victimization by type of crime, time and day of occurrence, its costs, and the crime report to the police. Likewise, it contains statistical information on the perception of security, prevention strategies and habits, and the performance of the authorities related to security at both the national and local levels. Their results make it possible to conduct detailed analyzes of security and crime in Jamaica.
