The Center of Excellence collaborates with HQ to provide training to Africa on SDG 16

Every Thursday, from November 19 to December 17, the “Regional Training on Measuring SDG 16 in Africa: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” was held virtually. This workshop was organized by the Data Development and Dissemination Section of UNODC HQ in Vienna, Austria, in collaboration with the Oslo Governance Center of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The objective of this workshop was for the participants to become familiar with the concepts, international standards and methodological tools, as well as to learn about the challenges associated with measuring the SDG 16 indicators related to violence prevention, strengthening of systems of criminal justice, prisons, access to justice, the fight against organized crime, illicit trafficking and corruption.

The Center of Excellence collaborated with HQ in the development of the workshop, as well as by presenting about crime victimization surveys (indicators 16.1.3, 16.1.4, 16.3.1), the methodology for measuring illicit financial flows in 4 Latin American countries (indicator 16.4.1), on seized weapons (indicator 16.4.2), as well as and guiding the group exercises in each session. Related materials and resources are available on the UNODC website, as well as on the UNDP SDG16 Hub.

During the 5 virtual sessions, a total of 111 officers from more than 38 countries in Africa participated. National institutions producing data on crime and justice from the Member States of the African region were represented, including the Police, Public Prosecutor’s Office, Courts, Prisons, National Statistical Offices, Ministries of the Interior and Justice, as well as other relevant national entities.

This workshop fostered interactive dialogue, providing space for discussion during virtual sessions. The group exercises provided an opportunity for participants to share their national experiences in data collection and share their challenges and concerns. It is planned that, in the first half of 2021, this series of workshops will be replicated by the Center of Excellence for the Latin American and Caribbean region.
