The Center of Excellence participates in the National Meeting to Measure Illicit Financial Flows in Mexico

November 17th, 2020. The National Technical Meeting to Measure Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) related to criminal activities in Mexico was held virtually, under the pilot to measure indicator 16.4.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The institutions which participated were National Center of Planning, Analysis and Information for the Fight against Crime (CENAPI), the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), the Tax Administration Service (SAT), the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), the National Commission against Addictions (CONADIC) and the Bank of Mexico (BANXICO).

As the custodian agency of this indicator, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), through the Center of Excellence (CoE) for Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice, completed the pilot of the methodological framework for measuring IFFs in four Latin American countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, during the period 2018-2020.

During the meeting, estimates of the total value of IFFs related to the heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine markets were presented, over the period 2015-2018.

Finally, two important publications related to the topic were mentioned: the Conceptual Framework for the Statistical Measurement of IFFs, which will be available in Spanish in December 2020, as well as the report of the pilot results to measure illicit markets in the participating countries, to be published during the first quarter of 2021.
