The Republic of Argentina promotes evidence-based decision-making

From April 9 to 13, the Under-secretariat of Crime Statistics, the area responsible for compiling, processing and disseminating national crime statistics in the Republic of Argentina, continued the activities for the implementation of the “Improvement plan for its statistical processes”, developed within the framework of the Statistical Quality Assessment that is being conducted by the Center of Excellence in Statistical Information on Government, Crime, Victimization and Justice, a joint project of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico.

As a first activity of the working week, an explanatory session on the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) was held in Buenos Aires, with the participation of the 24 provinces of the Republic and the Federal Forces. Through the use of this Classification, Argentina will adopt the international standards on crime statistics approved by the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) and the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ). This, will contribute to increase its quality and comparability of data, but will mainly allow for the generation of better data on crimes that occur in the country. Having more accurate, comprehensive and timely statistical information, facilitates the understanding of the context and place where the crimes occur, the profile of the victims and of the perpetrators involved; which are essential data for decision-making on security and crime prevention.
