The International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes in Jamaica and the improvement of its Victimization Survey

From 10 to 12 July, the Center of Excellence (CoE), part of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), technically assisted Jamaica in order to improve the quality and availability of their data on crime and criminal justice, especially in view of the new information needs deriving from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Initially, an introductory workshop on the International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) was held with different Jamaican authorities, including the Ministry of National Security (MNS), the National Bureau of Statistics (STATIN), Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine, Court Management Services and the Department of Correctional Services.

The ICCS is a tool that contributes to measure some indicators of Objective 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Quality of Crime Statistics. At the end of this workshop, the need to generate a road map to implement the classification under the leadership of STATIN was raised.

Also, a technical meeting was also held to review Jamaica’s National Crime Victimization Survey, where best methodological practices were reviewed in accordance with UNODC’s Manual on Victimization Surveys and the Latin America and the Caribbean Crime Victimization Survey Initiative (LACSI).

With these works, Jamaica will be the first Caribbean country to adopt the principles of this Initiative.

These activities were promoted and financed by Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID).
